Instrumentation & Control Engineer - Trona, CA
Excellent high desert/mountainous location for the outdoors type without the expense of the crowded coastal areas of California located in the Bakersfield / Ridgecrest / Mojave area. In this very large 500+ person inorganics production facility you will be responsible for providing management and technical expertise on large and complex engineering and construction projects through all phases of project development and execution. Responsible for leading, organizing and managing project engineers, technicians and staff who design, develop, construct and implement engineering projects. You will supervise 5 direct and a total group of about 20 will report to the VP-Operations.
- Bachelor of Science degree in chemical, instrumentation or electrical engineering and seven years related experience in manufacturing and/or chemical process industry.
-15 or more years of related experience in industrial operation facility; chemical, refining or mining operations preferred.
- Strong understanding of process, mechanical and electrical engineering practices and processes.
- Experience with the development of P&IDâ??s, instrument specifications and data sheets.
The candidate should have a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. Strong analytical, verbal, writing and presentation skills are required. Must have knowledge of typical process industry standards and codes (ISA, IEC, etc.) and a general understanding of IEEE, NETA, and NFPA. The successful candidate must be willing and able to spend up to 50% of the time in physical plant areas.
They are seeking experienced and motivated candidates for the position of Instrumentation and Control Engineer. This position is responsible for the overall instrumentation and control system engineering, including the development, engineering, design and documentation of new and replacement systems. The incumbent will work with a multidisciplinary group of engineers in the areas of process, electrical, chemical and mechanical disciplines. This position will also need to work with management, operators, technicians and designers to support and develop a seamless Instrument and Control system. Responsibilities include measurement and final element specifications and selection for new and existing operations along with local and remote control systems engineering, control improvement and strategy planning, and design services for three continuous process mineral manufacturing plants, a power and steam generation plant and mining operations. This position is responsible for the compatibility, coordination and efficiency of the instrumentation and control engineering design. This position reports to the Central Engineering Department Management. Compliance with applicable State and Federal Regulations related to safety and the environment is an important part of this position.
Provide for the development and creation of instrumentation engineering packages, including installation drawings, data sheets and specifications so that they are in full compliance with recognized industry standards, safety standards and various internal customer specifications Responsible for the production and accuracy of, but not limited to, P&IDs, control panel drawings and wiring diagrams
Must be able to perform calculations, and develop drawings and specifications for the purchase and installation of measurement and final element instrumentation.
Assist other engineering disciplines with equipment selection, cost estimating, equipment layout and coordination.
Prepare Instrumentation Technical Procurement Specifications for DCS, CEMS, process measurement instruments and final elements such as control valves including installation details.
Provide engineering trouble-shooting and problem solving of existing equipment, and implementing system upgrades and modifications. Perform field inspections and technical support of existing facilities systems.
Capable of using sound engineering judgment to develop independent, original solutions based on industry standard techniques.
Review electrical schematic diagrams to coordinate the I&C requirements with the electrical discipline.
Add controls and instrumentation to plant Piping &Instrumentation Diagrams.
Help to ensure that all I&E and I&C documentation and drawings are maintained and up to date.
Investigate root cause of significant control systems failures. Assist in the implementation of corrective actions for control system issues.
Ensure and perform effective scope and change management.
Ensure compliance with industry codes and standards as well as Company policies, procedures and guidelines
Provide instrumentation & controls engineering in support of a process manufacturing environment. Provide leadership in PLC, DCS, HMI and SCADA system planning, design, programming and upgrade.
Responsible for the design and development of instrumentation systems for industrial facilities, including the specification of industrial instrumentation and the material to support installation.
Develop I&C conceptual plan studies and/or project standards.
Prepare instrumentation calculations for process measurement and final element instruments including relief valves as required.
Coordinate instrumentation engineering and design with other engineering disciplines and plant operations.
Provide engineering consulting associated with design of industrial production facilities, utility plants, HVAC, Process, and Piping system design related to facility engineering.
Make independent technical judgment on details.
Develop I&C drawings, construction specifications, specify instruments and write sequence of operations and logic diagrams.
Review design drawings such as location plans, layouts, panel/ termination details, installation details, and schedules to assure compliance with project requirements.
Work with the project team and engineering contractors to develop control strategies, specify DCS/SIS hardware, specify instrumentation, and install systems
Ability to apply problem-solving and experienced-based judgment to complex challenges in ways that deliver measurable and sustainable improvements in operational performance.
Competency in all facets of process instrument & control engineering.
Willingness to â??roll up sleevesâ?? and work at all levels of organization as circumstances require.
Must be able to provide engineering and technical support to plants which are in continuous operation.
Understanding of process equipment operation and troubleshooting.
Be self-motivated and be able to work effectively with minimal direct supervision.
Work effectively in a team environment.
